Train travel may not be for the busy business traveler or for those that want to spend all of their vacation at a single destination. If you have the time and a little extra money to spend try traveling by rail. It is very easy to book and virtually stress-free during your excursion. The geography of the United States is so diverse. The transition of this country's wondrous scenery is right outside your window. Here are 5 tips I learned while onboard:

1. Keep a small bag with toiletries, meds, and a change of clothes in your stateroom. Larger pieces of luggage will be stowed on shelves outside your room or in another car.

2. Bring your own beverages and snacks on board. Along your journey, you will have time to jump off the train during stops. Pop into a nearby market. We bought a bottle of wine and shared a toast with our room attendant.

3. Most longer routes have an observation car. Plan on spending some time in one and take in some panoramic 360-degree views. It's first come first served seating so try it during a meal seating.

4. The dining car is open to all. A stateroom ticket includes all meals and priority reservations. There are usually 2 seating times to choose from. It is likely you will be seated with other guests at your table.

5. Upload movies or bring DVDs before you depart. You will not have wifi throughout your trip. Some trains have internet service but it's not nearly strong enough to play streaming media.

I found traveling by train to be so relaxing and enjoyable. Our route included 2 nights. The stateroom was a huge perk and well worth the additional cost. We met many of our fellow travelers, and I will have eternal memories from our trek on the tracks. Give it try at least once. All aboard!!!
