5 Long Distance Flight Tips

Spring is a great time to travel to Europe or other destinations abroad. The weather is comfortable and fellow tourist numbers are lower than the summer months. For some people, having to endure the 10 or more hour long-haul, can be a nightmare. However, these long treks can be made quite comfortable with some simple preparation. Turn your nightmarish journey into a dream following these simple tips.

Book a good seat. I always reserve an aisle seat in the middle of the plane. It provides the smoothest ride and keeps you away from infants who are usually in the front rows on long flights. It also provides quick access to the restrooms.
Stay hydrated limiting caffeine and alcohol. Aircraft cabins are quite dry due to the air conditioning and filtration systems. Drink plenty of water throughout the flight. Caffeine and alcohol will only dehydrate you.
Move around the plane every couple of hours. Keep that circulation going especially if you are prone to Edema or DVT blood clots. If you're trapped in the middle or window seats try marching your legs and flexing your feet.
Wear loose comfortable clothes. You're going to be in them for hours. I also wear shoes that I can slip on and off easily. Foot odor isn't an issue for me. Avoid wearing a belt or jewelry. This will speed up the TSA security check process.
Relax! This is a great time to get away from outside distractions. You have a crew waiting on you and no cell phone coverage. Make the most of the in-flight entertainment. Most long distance carriers provide numerous movie choices.
I have ventured on these long flights numerous times. The longest being the Los Angeles to Sydney route coming in at just under 14 hours. Thinking about what's in store, the adventures, a new culture, and the sights keeps me positive and motivated. Also, a nice greeting to the crew helps as you board. A few years back we were upgraded to first-class on a flight to Germany. We were so excited our attendant thought it was our honeymoon and we received the best service ever. Keep these tips in mind and enjoy your next long-haul.
